Sixth Formers Leading Language Learning
On Wednesday 25th September, Sixth Form Language Ambassadors at South Bromsgrove welcomed Year 8 pupils from St John’s CofE Middle School, Aston Fields Middle School and Parkside Middle School for a celebration of Modern Languages. More than 30 year 8 pupils were treated to a morning of fun activities designed to develop their linguistic skills in French, Spanish and German. Activities included key vocabulary, verbs and phrases as well as some aspects of popular culture and history of some of our closest European neighbours.
The morning was designed and led by a team of Sixth Form Language Ambassadors, all of whom are studying a Modern Foreign Language as part of their A Level Programme at South Bromsgrove High Sixth Form. Speaking about the importance of language learning, Head of Modern Foreign Languages at South Bromsgrove, Helene Rogers said, “The European Day of Languages provides a great opportunity to celebrate language learning and to generate enthusiasm for the development of this valuable life skill. We are very keen to nurture our linguists of the future and we hope that some of the year 8 pupils that came today will become our Sixth Form Language Ambassadors of the future.” Feedback from the Y8 pupils involved was very positive and pupils from Parkside Middle School commented on how ‘interactive and helpful’ the language ambassadors were and how they felt ‘inspired’ to broaden their knowledge and understanding of other languages and cultures. Katie Parkes, Language Ambassador and Sixth Form Student at South said “Being a Language Ambassador has allowed me to promote the value of learning a language to younger pupils. I have found the opportunity to share my passion with others very fulfilling. I think it’s so important that younger pupils are able to experience new languages and cultures.”
