Over the past few years, some students have been working to build an electric car for the Greenpower Formula 24 Racing Series. They will be competing against hundreds of other schools from across the country in a bid to produce the fastest electric car.
The aim of the event is to give students an opportunity to develop their engineering and design skills in a practical, ‘hands-on’ fashion and to give them experience in solving problems and thinking outside the box. The project focuses on the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics - STEM - subjects, and seeks to enhance their knowledge and understanding of them.
The vehicle that the students at South Bromsgrove High School have built has a steel frame, a plywood body, and can reach speeds of up to 30mph. Soon, the students will be racing the car in the regional heats in the hope that they will qualify for the international finals.
