Humanities Conference with Blind Dave Heeley & Patrick Smith
Every year South holds a Humanities Conference, bringing inspirational speakers to our students and this year we had two great men (three if you include Seamus the dog!) talking to about 100 students.
Our first speaker was Blind Dave Heeley (no, we’re not being rude, that’s how he likes to be known) the endurance athlete, who recounted the story of going blind as a teenager and facing this huge trauma head on. He spoke of his decision to live life to the full and recounted his adventures and fund raising, which most people wouldn’t dream of attempting. Seamus, Dave’s wonderful German shepherd was also in attendance, lapping up the attention.
The second speaker was the local and hugely inspirational Patrick Smith who told of his time in Northern Ireland, Bosnia and Kosovo as a medic in the army. He is now the chairman of Bromsgrove’s Royal British Legion.
The packed audience was really appreciative of these two amazing and inspirational men. Tiffany Burchell said “Blind Dave and Patrick taught me to never give up because of the bad things in your life; keep following your dreams”, and Josh Boam commented “Although my grades are important to me, I learnt that if you don’t get the grade you want, you can still do something with your life.”
More details about Dave can be found @blinddaveheeley and if you see a gentleman walking a 26” high miniature pony, say hello to Patrick and Peanut.
